Exercises in Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
(By Dr. Deepika Bansal β Physiotherapist in Balewadi, Wakad, Aundh, Pimple Saudagar)
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) occurs when the median nerve is compressed at the wrist, leading to pain, tingling, numbness, and weakness in the hand. Along with medical care, physiotherapy exercises can reduce pressure on the nerve, improve mobility, and restore hand function.
Key Exercises:
Nerve Gliding: Start with hand in a fist, then open fingers, extend wrist and fingers back, gently stretching the median nerve.
Tendon Gliding: Move fingers through positions β straight, hook fist, full fist, flat fist β to mobilize tendons within the tunnel.
Wrist Flexor Stretch: Extend arm with palm up, gently pull fingers back with the other hand until a stretch is felt.
Wrist Extensor Stretch: Arm straight with palm down, gently bend wrist with opposite hand.
Finger Stretch with Elastic Band: Place a rubber band around fingers and thumb, slowly open and close hand to strengthen.
Grip Strengthening: Squeeze a soft ball or therapy putty for 5β10 reps.
Tips:
Perform exercises slowly, within pain-free range.
Avoid prolonged wrist flexion or repetitive strain during recovery.
Combine with ergonomic corrections and splinting at night if advised.
Conclusion
Exercises help reduce symptoms, improve nerve mobility, hand strength, and wrist flexibility, making them an essential part of CTS management and prevention.
