Do you feel sharp or burning pain on the outer side of your knee during running or stair climbing? Does the pain worsen after long walks or workouts? Are you searching for a βphysiotherapist near meβ for persistent lateral knee pain? These symptoms may point toward Iliotibial Band Syndrome.
What Is IT Band Syndrome?
IT Band Syndrome occurs when the iliotibial band, a thick band of connective tissue running from the hip to the knee, becomes tight or irritated. It is common in runners, cyclists, and people with poor lower limb alignment, weak hip muscles, or sudden increases in activity. Pain is usually felt on the outer knee and may radiate upward toward the thigh.
How Physiotherapy Helps
Physiotherapy addresses the root cause rather than just pain relief. Treatment includes stretching of the IT band and surrounding muscles, strengthening of the gluteus medius and core, gait and posture correction, and manual therapy to reduce tissue tightness. Activity modification and gradual return-to-sport planning are essential parts of recovery.
What You Can Try at Home
Avoid sudden training changes, reduce downhill running, use proper footwear, apply ice after activity, and perform regular hip and thigh stretching along with basic strengthening exercises.
