Rotator Cuff Strengthening Exercises
(By Dr. Deepika Bansal β Physiotherapist in Balewadi, Wakad, Aundh, Pimple Saudagar)
The rotator cuff is a group of four muscles around the shoulder that stabilize the joint and support lifting, pushing, and rotational movements. Weakness or injury in these muscles often leads to pain, instability, and reduced range of motion. Strengthening exercises are crucial for rehabilitation and prevention of shoulder injuries.
Key Rotator Cuff Strengthening Exercises:
External Rotation with Band: Secure a resistance band at waist height, keep elbow close to body at 90Β°, and rotate the arm outward slowly.
Internal Rotation with Band: Same setup, but rotate the arm inward across the body.
Scaption (Thumbs Up): Raise arms diagonally (30β45Β° forward from the side) up to shoulder height with thumbs pointing up.
Prone Horizontal Abduction: Lie face down, lift arms out to the side with thumbs up to strengthen posterior cuff.
Wall Angels: Stand against a wall, slide arms up and down in a βgoalpostβ position, keeping contact with wall.
Tips:
Begin with low resistance and controlled movements.
Perform 10β15 reps, 2β3 sets, pain-free.
Focus on posture and avoid shoulder shrugging.
Conclusion
Regular rotator cuff strengthening enhances shoulder stability, mobility, and injury prevention, making it essential for athletes, fitness enthusiasts, and post-injury rehabilitation.
